Mikki- 04-14-2008
Hi, I haven't posted in so long. At the end of last year I was waiting for the arrival of my first bjd, an ebay purchase, a Volks SD called Kun who'd had her face up removed by the seller.

Well, you could say that our first meeting wasn't a great success - I hadn't expected her to be so yellow! She looks like she has jaundice, the poor thing. Maybe this appears exaggerated due to her lack of face up, I don't know.

I also didn't realise that she would be so heavy, she weighs a ton! I felt that she was awkward to handle because of that, but maybe I'm getting used to it now.

So, I have to confess, I stuck her back in her box and shoved her under the bed where she stayed until recently. (Yes I know, she's not too impressed with me either!). Well, I thought I'd do that rather than make a hasty decision to sell her again. So now she's out and about and I'm trying to bond with her.

When I was waiting for her to arrive I booked her in with a face up artist, and her place is due this Spring, so should be due any time soon. I've realised from looking at many other dolls online that I'd like to go for a goth look, but is that going to look stupid with this whole custard cream look she has going on? dollchitchat/4.gif

The top photo is the slip she came with and the bottom one is her wearing some Sasha clothing which is all I have that will fit her. Her colour looks fine in the photos actually, but believe me she is much more yellow in real life.

So, in a nutshell, what I'd like to know is, Is it possible to do anything about her all over colour? Thanks in advance. Mikki

Hi Mikki,

There isn't much you can do about her overall color unless you choose to paint her and then you run the very likely risk of it rubbing off especially in the jointed areas. You would also have to re-string her if you took this option and probably seal the entire painted area somehow.

I'm not sure if your Kun is "yellowed" and if she is, it could be a result of too much sunlight. Resin does tend to discolor over time but this discoloration occurs more quickly if they are displayed in direct sunlight.

Is the color consistent all over the body? Or is the head more yellow than the rest?

I think that structurally your Kun is lovely, but I can't really see the color on my monitor. She is definitely not "white skin" but rather "normal" and a goth-themed doll is still certianly possible.

What kind of goth look are you aiming for?

Hi Elphsnt

Thanks for such a fast response. Her colour is the same all over, even the wig cap area, so it looks like that's just her skin colour.

On the Volks website it says her skin is Pureskin Normal

http://www.volks.co.jp/en/superdollfie/sd/kun/index_kun.aspx

but she looks much more natural on their photos than this doll does. But then again on the photos I took she looks better too. Our hallway is painted Dulux Courtyard Cream and that's a pretty good match for her dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07621.gif

I found some great Kun faces on this website:

http://www.angelden.net/fcs/heads/sd-f22.html

and love the ones with black wigs and pale faces. Also the one by Seph with the purple streaked wig. There are so many gorgeous ones on there though. It's hard to choose really.

On this group, I like wasabi_project's Rath very much and his skin doesn't look particularly pale. I'd like to go for a shortish, spiky black (maybe with silver streaks) wig anyway and perhaps a purple look to the face up. I'll be looking for some black clothing and will probably have most of her body covered anyway, so maybe she'll look OK?

The "white skin" Kun is actually an FCS (Fully Customized Service) which is about $900+ depending on options. I think your Kun is probably the same as the doll with red hair and green eyes contributed by Nett with the "normal" skintone.

You could still go for a goth look, but the doll will never look as white as the pictures.

I have seen some fabulous Kun's and I hope your custom face-up will make her the doll of your dreams! dollchitchat/vdaybouncies3.gif

She really is beautiful in her facial structure and of course, you can't see the yellow tint in the picture. I really do like the Goth faceups by Seph and I'd love to know where the blue almost pupil-less eyes came from!

Good luck with her~

Hi Mikki,

I don't know much about these dolls... dollchitchat/AddEmoticons00114.gif

I am collecting the babys but I love this beautiful face....
I think the colour is beautiful too...

What a lovely doll she is... dollchitchat/AddEmoticons12865.gif

Hi Mikki,

In a nutshell...the answer to your question- "Is there anything I can do about her overall colour" is no.
I can't really add much more to the excellent advice that has already been given by elphsnt dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07628.gif

And Volks dolls are very heavy-you seem to get pound for pound more resin that those from other companies. dollchitchat/bigthink.gif

Your Kun is beautiful but if you do not like her colour I really think you should seriously consider selling her and buy a different colour resin doll. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons12628.gif

Luts dolls are made in a more pinky resin colour, there are always the more tan colour resins to choose from too. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07635.gif

I suppose it is rather like the early Sasha’s and their dark shiny vinyl colour, as opposed to the much later lighter and more matte vinyl -you either like it or you don’t. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07628.gif

You might change your opinion when she has her faceup, but no matter how wonderful the faceup is, if the colour of her resin is too yellow for you now, it will always be too yellow for you.

Remember that all this is what I feel and I only say it to try to help you make the correct decision for you and Kun
I do hope you can sort it out because these dolls are too expensive to lay in the box-aren’t they?! dollchitchat/ange4.gif

A huge THANK YOU to everyone for your thoughts and advice which have really been a big help. dollchitchat/bearhugblinkie1.gif

Before I posted I was hopeful that her colour could be altered, as I'd read all about how customisable these dolls are. So, once you guys explained that it wasn't the easiest way to go, I had a revelation - buy ANOTHER doll to get the pale and interesting look I want and give this girl a look that is right for HER dollchitchat/141.gif

Now I know that probably seems quite obvious, but I'd planned on having "just one" - which was clearly a non-starter idea altogether dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07621.gif

So when Elphsnt was talking about the Kun with red hair and green eyes I took another look at her, and others with a Celtic look, and am now very enthusiastic about my Irish girl and a whole story and personality are beginning to form. dollchitchat/pompomgirl.gif

Lynnie now has her head, and I'm actually missing her, which is a good sign.

Jane - I just saw your reply as I came to write this post, and I agree with everything you say. I probably would have sold her but am now really excited about the changed ideas AND I've got the fun of browsing around for the next addition. I was interested to learn that Volks resin is particularly heavy. I have got used to that now, but am looking at other makes anyway for the next one, so it will be a bonus if they're not quite so weighty.

Go raibh mile maith agat (that's Thanks in Irish)

I am so pleased that you came up with the solution yourself! dollchitchat/141.gif
And I am also delighted that Kun is staying with you, she really is a most gorgeous sculpt.
And Lynnie’s work is the best! dollchitchat/AddEmoticons12865.gif

And you are quite right, you can never have just one!!! dollchitchat/vdaybouncies3.gif

I am happy to see you decided to keep Kun and give her a new look.Post pictures when you get her home. These dolls look so differently with different colored wigs and eyes and face up.It will be lots of fun.If you still don't bond with her after then, sell her and get a white skin BJD.Good luck.
I have a Volks YO but she is light.Maybe she is too small to be heavy. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07621.gif Have not seen other BJD from other companies so not able to compare the weight of these BJD.But I personally like something with a little weight(but not too heavy). dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07635.gif

The SD10 and SD13 dolls are much heavier actually than the MSD size. I was comparing bodies at Tenshi No Sato and was surprised at how heavy they were, but I think some mobility is compromised in the process. My MSD has more posing ability (although not much more) and my Domuya had tonnes more posability, but the body itself wasn't as "pretty".
