I am due in another case of a "free to a good home" !!!!!

People see these adverts for pets free to a good home and just cant seem to help themselves. They dont know what they are getting into and dont know how to care for the pet properly but its free so they take it. !!!! Its kitten season and with kitten season comes ferret kit season too.

I have 4 ferrets, all hand tamed and all silly sausages. Its not easy to hand tame a ferret. You need nerves and skin of steal.!!!! They bite like youve never felt before.Ive also lead trained my babes so they can be walked out on a harness and lead to give them a bit of stimulation outdoors out of their run.A woman who lives at the end of our road sees me walking my four and thought it was real cute.Yesterday she saw some advertised free to a good home she went and got a pair. She has no proper housing,no food,no bedding,no means of keeping them and now she realises they bite she doesnt want them. !!!!!! She sent her son round this morining to ask if we could have them if things didnt get better for her with the handling. So it looks like i will have a couple of manic ferret kits to raise.

It makes me so mad why people cant THINK before acting on impulse.!!! Why dont people research the pet they intend to get before giving it a home? hy dont they do any preperation???? !!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!! dollchitchat/stick.gif dollchitchat/Christo_pull_hair.gif

I am just off to call the local ferret rescue to ask for back up and advice.Wish me luck please ladies. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07628.gif

Edited to add that now you lovely ladies may understand why i never do layaways.I may want a new baby and i may fall in love with him/her.Imay be allowed a layaway but i never know whats round the corner. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07628.gif

grrr thats typical , some people just do rush into things, you cannot do that when keeping animals ,
i have 2 large japanese akitas , who are the sof-*test*-('") brred i have ever known , but in the hands of uninformed or inexperienced handlers they can become a nightmare , yet people keep on getting them with no prior research and then wonder why their gardens have turned into a moonscape , or the kids get knocked down by over boisterous fully grown dogs.
fingers crossed that its not too tough if you end up with them , which sounds inevitable

Ive been trying to call the rescue for nearly an hour now but its constantly engaged. Its not suprising really as so many will be needing homes this time of year.

People are to worried about spending money on getting their ferrets neutered that they dont bother. If a female ferret isnt "Serviced" once a year it will carry on bleeding till it dies. Its easier for some to just them have the one litter rather than pay out for spaying. The numbers build up and this is the state it gets to. !!!! This years kits will be around 8/10 weeks old now and looking for homes. The rescues will be bursting.I know i will be rasing these two if it comes to it. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07628.gif

I've lost count of the number of people who have shouted that my Staffie is an illegal breed, usually after she has snapped at their dog after it has come running up to her.
We never let her off her lead or take her out alone as she is very strong and if a dog runs up to her she will go for it but she is the sof-*test*-('") thing going with people.
When we got Steff from the cat and dog home we were told she had been found as a stray then adopted but returned (you have 1 month to return a pet if you change your mind) because she didn't get on with the other pets they already had.
It's a well known fact that Staffies don't get on with other dogs so why on earth would you get one if you have other pets?
I think people see a cute fluffy animal and all common sense goes out of the window, maybe it's time to have some sort of -*test*-('") before taking on a pet.
I hope you get some help Lizzie.

People forget that "babies" need training. Perhaps you could provide them with a few pointers on how to train their ferrets to help make it easier for her? dollchitchat/323.gif

Ive just called the rescue. They have no space or any time to take them in.We have two ferret rescues over the whole of Devon and Cornwall and everywhere is full up. !!!!
I will know by the end of today what the woman intends to do with these ferrets.I have no cage though and cant just put them in with mine. They may fight.Introductions take time and i dont have that time when i have no cage. The only thing i can think is to section off a part of my ferrets cage for the babies to live in.My ferrets cage is an indoor cage. Its floor to ceiling and 8ft wide,4ft deep.
It brings me to tears.Ive been told not to hepl this lady anymore as she knows i will bail her out every time.Last time i said no she let loose all her rats on the moors so i cant say no.I cant see two baby ferrets left loose to try to fend for themselves.

i agree you never know what you may pick up, i have answered to agree to to a good home ad before but it was for a budgie, i emailed the lady and she emailed me with lots o questions before agreeing to let me have the budgie, this lady wanted a good home, most people just give them away to anyone who will have them, this lady wanted pictures of my budgies and ask lots o questions,

i have 3 rabbits now i know that one is female so i bought a new cage to stop breeding till i get them "done" , my neighbour bought 2 boy guinea pigs turns out one was Le and they have a pregnant pig and guess who has been asked to rehome the babies, now that was down to the breeder, thing is even at pet shops i check the animals myself so i know what i have, i also have a female budgie in amongst my males but i know not to put a nest box in and if i did have babies i have knowledge to deal with it,

wow going off the subject there i agree with you Liz that free to a good home is bad allso people who ask for free pets, if they can't afford to put money in to buying them and setting up a home how do they expect to be able to pay or it up keep, i saved up for my cockatiel did my research, bought the cage, free pets are not the best my free budgie arrived untame, good thing i know what i am doing with budgies

again i will now shut up but it does annoy me

Lizzie- 10-05-2008
Because i am stupid/soft and everyone knows it they bring their unwanted pets to me or come to me for advice on rehoming.I always say that free toa good home is no good.Even if some one asks a small fee they know that if some one pays for it they really want it.

Ferrets need a big cage and a run. They are escapologists so they will find any small gap to squeeze through. !!! They need specialized food that isnt cheep too. !!! They need spaying/neutering at around 6mnth old to stop breeding, agressiveness, and death for females. They need the same jabs as cats do too. They also need worming and flea treatment. They are very sociable animals so need alot of time spent with them and alot of things to do.They love tunnels and hiding places.Nip training is not for the feint hearted as by God it hurts when they bite !!!! Even when they get older some will still nip in exsitmnent. One of mine is a swine for nipping. !!!! Theres so much to take into consideration when owning a ferret but when all is said and done they make the most fantastic pets. !!! I will ALWAYS own a ferret. dollchitchat/angel_sm029.gif dollchitchat/vdaybouncies3.gif dollchitchat/ange4.gif

dollchitchat/pompomgirl.gif You have ferrets yourself Sharon. !!! They make excelent pets dont you think?

Once neutered and spayed they dont smell any more than a cat or kitten.Mine are also all litter trained so that helps when its playtime. dollchitchat/2.gif

dollchitchat/angel_sm029.gif Lizzie you sound like a saviour to animals! But I understand how tiring and upsetting this can be as I myself have people bringing orphan birds to me and it is sad when they don't survive and tiring when they do!

As for ferrets, my brother in law had them when I was 12/13 and I rushed over when I heard a commotion (coming from their hutch) This creamy white ferrets' back was covered in blood and another one had it by the neck.
I fetched my brother in law saying one was killing the other...but it turned out they were 'making babies'!

I remember thinking crikey...hope it's not like that for all species dollchitchat/smilie_help.gif dollchitchat/3r.gif

I adore all kinds of animals, pets and wild ones too.I also love kiddies and old people. It the people in between i find i cant get on with so well. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons12628.gif
Theres so much cruelty to animals children and old people that i suppose i stick with that age group.Or it could be that the silence of the animals, the childishness of the kiddies and senility of the old folk suit me. dollchitchat/2.gif

I have my dog because my neighbour couldn't keep her, she's a staff not full but 99% and I do have two cats. She was 8 months when I got her. It took time for the cats to accept her but they'd lived with my other dog who was there before they arrived. The elder of the cats was a rescue, my son took him from someone who was feeding him bread and milk and wondering why at 12 weeks he had the runs all the time dollchitchat/Christo_pull_hair.gif It is frustrating when they're not house trained or they do damage but if you can't stand it don't have them. The youngsters seem to think of them as an accessory but that accessory eats, pees and poos, has a will of it's own and lives, breathes and feels like we do. When my brother got his staff from Battersea I had to take mine to see if they would be sociable because they would be mixing. He was told his couldn't live with another staff and might not mix well in parks. Every dog owner in the park knows Sid and he has so many doggy playmates now. My brother was very nervous of socialising him but letting him run with mine proved the best thing, he's better behaved than her now!!!

good luck with your ferrets it's a shame people don't learn about them first. dollchitchat/Christo_pull_hair.gif
