.This is the poly form with a nail in, and on a stand ready to start.

.This poly form has had the forehead shaved and also the neck, as the neck is too thick, and you need to put a good thickness of clay in that area , as it has to support the head when fixed to the body.

.I have used plastic teddy bear eyes as a base, I find this very helpful as I like a solid base for building up my eyes, these are only used for a sleeping baby, now we are ready to start with the clay, I use modelene so this may be different from other clays, I always put it in the food processor, as it softens it this way, then I put it through the pasta machine, and off we go .

.I build up slowly with layers of clay, I can't show you every step I take as I would never complete the baby, as I'm changing it all the time, I like to puta line where the eyes end that is why I lay the clay on this way.

.I have put the second layer on now, so now I will start adding clay to the lower half of the face.

.I have started with thicker pieces at the lower section of the face, this is quicker, but if your just starting stick to layers as it helps to keep the sides of the face even.

.You can see I have cling film at the back of the head, this is here to help keep the clay clean, and also to stop it from drying out, I'm still building the face up in layers, with modelene it doesn't join with out leaving a mark, so I build the face up first, then I have to add a complete sheet of clay over it, then I start sculpting.

.I add the nose, and blend in , its important to blend in as you go as this cuts down on air bubbles, you must remove these as you work, if they get trapped in the clay they can cause cracks.

.I'm always pushing the clay and working it to keep it soft, this is easier for moving it as you go along, it helps to have baby pics in front of you, never sculpt with a pic of someone else's sculpt, as this is only their perception of a baby, and we all see something different, a profile pic is a very good help, as then you see the head from the side.

.The face is beginning to take shape, but we have a long way to go.

.meant to say once I had put the nose on then I add the complete sheet of clay, at this stage I just work with the clay that is on the head, moving it and blending it, and then I start to add the detail.

.It gets harder to explain what to do now, as this is where you do your own thing, I mostly use a paint brush to stroke the shape I,m looking for in the face.

.mouths I like a big one to start with, I like to get my finger in there and this way it gives me the option of all different types, don't be frightened of the clay just get stuck in, if it goes wrong just put another layer on and keep going.

.Its beginning to take shape now, but this is still the basic face, it needs to be tidied and the features need working on, never be in a hurry.

.This is the profile pic of the face so far, I have now to go and work on the rest of it ok.

.Now I have the final coat on, I can only add clay underneath, one nostril is not as fat as the other, so you can see its having a tad of clay pushed up the nose, this will do the trick.

.here is an underneath shot.

.now to build up the top of the head.

.This way I can build up the top of the head and the back, and any join mark will be well under the hair line.

.This shows how many layers there are to build it up, its better to have too much and take it off than to have to rebuild it again.

.I like to add the eye lashes about now, as when I roll the head to blend it all in it seals the lashes well in.

.smoothed, there are two pics of this showing all round.

.Ears, marking with pins is a good idea, then turn the head upside down and check at all angles to see if they are placed the same either side.

user posted image

.I put the top pin in line with the corner of the eye, and the bottom one in line with the corner of the mouth , this is just a guide line.

.I roll a ball of clay, flatten it a little, then half it, shape it to a kidney shape, then match with the other half mirroring each other, then place behind the pins on the head, remove the pins, then blend in the joining area of the ears to the face .

.The largest crochet hook is a perfect size for the indentation of the ear.
