I saw this post on another forum and thought it might be interesting to post over here too.

So What is it you have done, that you said you never would?

I'm sure everyone here has something they have said they would never do in collecting dolls but have ended up doing it anyway.

I'll go first.
I collect BJD's I said I would never buy a BJD over $800, that went straight out the window so I told myself I would never buy a doll in a higher then $1000 price bracket again, that also didn't work out so now I just buy who I like and forget about the price ^^;

I told myself I would never spend to much on an outfit, didn't stick to that either ^^;

I told myself I would never sell body parts off my dolls, that went out the window aswell I sold Ishtars body to fund another.

And lastly I told myself I would never buy random body parts, that also hasn't work out as I have just bought a head ^^;

So what is it that you have done? Do you stick to your own rules or like me are you permanently breaking them?

i did once promise myself i ould never pay over £100 for a doll and i broke that lol

cindy1- 10-05-2008
I said i'd never buy a doll that was under 2.5 foot, was older than 18 months, weighed 2 stone and looked more real than myself since then i have bought 100's dollchitchat/2.gif Mind you that was 8 years ago!

Almost every rule i set myself i break, its easier just to set no rules and see what happens and go with the flow! dollchitchat/141.gif

dollchitchat/addemoticons558.gif I have broken every rule I ever set myself to. Including those about how much I would spend like you H.
It is like the doll buying part of me is a totally separate entity to the rule making me. They do not communicate at all. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons12628.gif

Something i thought i would never do is sell most of my Lullabydolls ooaks.I never ever wanted to but it's a joke having beautiful dolls in this crapshack so either a garage conversion or a new house is the only way to have these beautiful dolls and to fully appreciate them.

I've told myself no more baby clothes until I finish at least one kit, so what do I do? I buy the matching hand knitted sets for my Cherish twins (who have more clothes than I do by the way!) I've had my eye on on ebay for the last few days.

I have almost finished painting Ariella and Madeline has her first coast of paint so at least I'm working on it.

I really had to resist going to Mothercare this weekend because there are some seriously cute winter dresses that I would not have been able to stop myself from buying. I can't wait to go shopping for Maddie and Ariella!

I have managed to refrain from buying anymore kits, but that too would have gone out the window if Janet hadn't have surprised me with Madeline.

I TRY to stick to what I "say" but when it comes to selling, all bets are off! I always SAY I would never sell a certain doll because I love her...but poop happens and it never holds true!

As for other things.....

I said i would never buy direct for my himmies and I didnt.

I said i wouldnt buy any more NEW himmies. I nearly did...i preordered jinka, but then cancelled when i came to my senses!

I try to hold true....but we wont say never!

I don't usually set rules. I have said, however, that I would never pay over $1000 for a Himstedt. I suppose I broke that a little in a round about way. I also said my max Himstedt number was a dozen and I'm below that as well. I could easily break those rules, however, in the upcoming years. The market for Himstedts has changed now that the factory is closing, so my rules will most likely change as well.

I also have limits on BJD outfits. At the same time, though, those limits are pretty high. My limt for a Yo-SD outfit (not including shoes) is $100, my limit for a MSD outfit (not including shoes) is $150 and my limit for a SD outfit (not including shoes) is $200. Now, since I don't have an SD that rule is easy to stick to. And I haven't broke the other two rules either. But I set those rules AFTER studying the outfit market so I think that's why I could stick to them. AND I limited myself to one Dolpa (BJD doll show in Japan) per year which means I could afford to spend within those limits. If I went to two or three shows I would be in big trouble.

I rarely say "never", but I do try to set limits if it is too easy to go overboard. I think, though, that to have the same rule for five years is a bit excessive since so much can change over that time period.

Well I said I'd never consider selling any of my three favorite forever
silicone babies... three favorite dolls period.. Julia Villanova
Sophia Roberson. or Maddie fagan.. While I have never tried
selling Maddie.. I have tried to sell Julia and Sophia off and
on to get my dream baby.. that I can't seem to forget about
and love to pieces.. RUBY May.. I had offers for trades
of other lovely babies but NOT RUBy. dollchitchat/stick.gif dollchitchat/smiley_tantrum.gif
But if they dont sell soon after listing them I change my
mind and wonder what was I thinking.. But I still have
Ruby as my forever dream baby that someday will be
mine on my screensaver.. dollchitchat/AddEmoticons1093.gif Hugs KAT/Maria

I really enjoyed reading everyones responses it looks like pretty much all of us fall into the trap of not being able to say no even though we know we should ^^

Chel, your post made me laugh I think a lot of people think BJD's are glorified barbies, I think it takes owning one to see what the difference is XD

Shawna, It's great that you manage to stick to your own rules, I've always found it impossible to stick to rules so breaking my own isn't that much of a surprise lol I might break them all the time but like you I know my limits and is something is completely out of my reach I will just leave it or get it at a later date ^^

Thank you to everyone who responded I don't feel like I'm the only person who breaks rules anymore XD

Oh yes and I forgot one, I said I would never own two of the same sculpt because I didn't see the point, but look at that I got identical twins ^^;
