I've noticed that several Himmies seem to have wonky eyes, very unevenly placed. Is this deliberate and if so what do you think of it??

I have to say it would really annoy me, I like eyes to be symmetrical in my dolls, there are enough imperfections in real life when I look in the mirror dollchitchat/AddEmoticons07630.gif

In 2002, most dolls had wonky eyes because of the glue. I suppose the glue could be to blame for wonky eyes now.

I don't like it either, but, to be honest, sometimes I don't notice it. For me the sculpt takes precedence over the eyes.

Good question!! dollchitchat/bearhugblinkie1.gif

Shawnah, I don't mean the placement of the eyes within the eye hole, I mean the actual hole sometimes seem to have been sculpted slightly above the other. Not on the same horizontal line if you get me.

If it's a little wonky in the sculpt then that is how it is and I quite like it - I think Tivi is a bit wonky and I love her!
2 of my girls have divergent squints which bothered me at first but not now - they are Margie and Kleine Lillimore. Their squints are not too bad, but are noticable. But I would hate to part with them though - even to get this fixed.

Do you mean the way the eyes are cut (i.e. the eye shape)? Or the sculpts themselves with the eyes at slightly different places?

Sometimes, the eye cuts bother me personally and I recall seeing a large range of eye sizes when shopping for Rinike. But, as far as the eyes being sculped (location wise on the face) I can't say it has ever bothered me. I think, though, that it is something you notice on film moreso than in person. In person, your eyes naturally see the bigger picture rather than every minute detail unless of course you are looking for it.

I think Annette makes the dolls non symmetrical because we are in real life and this is what makes AH's dolls look like real children. I must say there have been dolls I have seen that the eyes haven't look right and it does put me off, but most of these are the older dolls. The new ones have lovely balanced eyes IMHO.

eyes are the first thing I notice and the thing that USUALLY draws me to the sculpt. I personally, think the squinting sculpts are more realistic looking (Margie, tetti etc) than non, but some dont like the characterish faces.

The eyelashes do get wonky sometimes, but are easily fixed (Sal, glad to hear that Lihle got hers fixed! yay!). The holes are cut by different people so they tend to be bigger smaller or medium. The sculpts themselves i have never noticed issues with. Maybe I am weird. i love the sculpts.

Guess I am on the fence on this one, but i love eyes more than any other part!

Yes Annette does sculpt one eye socket larger than the other. I didn't realise about the 2002 dolls - I must have been lucky cos all of my 2002 are fine!

Yes - it is sometimes the way the eye hole is cut. I went nuts with my Lenny trying to get his eyes even. I had had the doll previously and he was perfect. He had this lovely dreamy look to him. This one has that "deer in the headlights" look to him. Finally, I realized that his left eye hole is cut smaller than the right. To really fix him, I am gonna have to enlarge that right eye. But I am too scared so far to do it. I will do it eventually though. I have seen the problem on most of the Lucy's I have seen also and it drives me nuts. I have had other dolls where the eyes are just not focused right and I have fixed them - that is easy on the later dolls.

Eye placement can really make or break a doll. It is almost an art in itself.

I am new here, so I hope you don't mind me popping in on a thread like this, but...as a doll sculptor, I have to say that open eyed babies are the hardest to sculpt. They take hours and sometimes days longer to sculpt because those eyes have to be perfect to look right. If they are not both placed at the exact same level and depth in the face, the face will look odd or just not quite right. This is especially true of dolls that are not smiling or crying or doing something that would make the different muscles of the face do different things, and actually make the eyes different. When you buy a doll from the internet from pictures only, it is a good thing to ask for photos taken straight on from the front. If a photo is taken at an angle, it will be hard to tell if the eyes are right. So, if you have an open eyed doll with perfect eyes, appreciate it because they are very hard to sculpt! And speaking of hard to sculpt ~ appreciate any smling, crying or yawning baby that looks realistic. It is very difficult to sculpt a natural looking smile especially.

Personally, I LOVE the Himstedt girls! I am on the lookout for one for myself right now! I LOVE the beautiful glass eyes she uses. They have such a depth of realism about them! The vinyl is amazing, and that hair!!! WOW! I LOVE it!

Thanks for listening... dollchitchat/AddEmoticons0762.gif Marita
